School Of Evangelization
A programme of the New Evangelization Team of
the Archdiocesan Commission for Missionary Activity.
When young people want to be priests or religious,
they go to the seminary or convent. When the laity
— when you and I — want to be full
Christian disciples and participate in the mission
of evangelization, where do we go?
Since 1986, NET has been running a School of
Evangelization to help the laity to become better
evangelizers and Christian witnesses.
'Evangelization is in fact the grace and vocation
proper to the Church, her deepest identity. She
exists in order to evangelize, to preach and teach,
to be the channel of the gift of grace, to reconcile
sinner with God, and to perpetuate Christ's sacrifice
in the Mass. ' - Pope Paul VI, Evangelii Nuntiandi

What
is taught in the School of Evangelization?
We
train lay Catholics to become better evangelizers
and Christian witnesses. The topics may include
Prayer, the Gospel, the Sacraments & the Mass,
Mission, Evangelization, Mariology, Public Speaking
Skills, Apologetics, and Christian Management.
Theory is complemented by practice. There will
be opportunities to plan, organise and participate
in outreach activities throughout the programme.

Who gives
the talks or sessions? We have our own
team of trainers, many of whom have conducted
courses overseas. We also rely on external trainers
— priests, religious and laity.

What are
the criteria for entry to the School?
The School welcomes all baptised Catholics aged
19 and above, who have been practising the faith
for at least a year, i. e. new converts are advised
to wait a while.
You must be prepared to give this formation programme
priority over other activities.
You must have the intention of serving the Church,
preferably in an evangelistic- oriented ministry,
and in direct evangelization as your circumstance
permits.
English is used as the medium of instruction,
hence you must be able to read, write and speak
in English.
To facilitate research, support and ease of contact,
you should have access to the Internet and the
public libraries.

How
much effort do I have to put in?
The programme
lasts 18 months, give or take a month. There is
a two- week break in December.
Classes are normally held once a week on a weekday
evening, with occasional weekend events. Project
work, if any, is done on your own time. In order
to explore and develop your gifts, there may be
one or more short- term attachments to a NET ministry
/ group. During this period, additional sessions
/ meetings may be needed outside of the School
time.

Are there
tests and assignments?
There are no tests or exams. Assignments are
in the form of the outreach activities mentioned
earlier. There may also be some project work done
in a group or individual basis.

Do I need
to pay anything?
We work on a co- payment basis. The bulk of the
day-to-day expenses will be borne by the School.
However, a nominal contribution of $15 to $20
is requested approximately every quarter to help
secure your commitment.
For special activities, the School pays for some
categories of group expenses, and you pay for
the rest. If outreaches are conducted overseas,
the School will endeavor to provide a subsidy,
but some fund- raising may be required on your
part.

What are
the criteria to graduate from the School?
Attendance is an important criterion but it is
not the sole criterion. Since this is an application-oriented
programme, you are required to demonstrate your
knowledge and skills acquired, e. g. through the
outreach programmes conducted by the School.

What
happens after I graduate from the School?
You
will be sent back to your parish or group, where
we hope you will act as catalysts of evangelization.
Some of you may also be invited to serve in NET
as trainers, administrators, worship \O/\O/ leaders,
Alpha programme facilitators, etc. Such service
does not preclude you from serving in your parish
or other group.
All alumni are expected to help out with NET
activities for at least one year after their graduation.
Alumni are also encouraged to keep in touch with
one another through activities that are organised
from time to time.

How do
I sign up for the School?
Write or email us your contact details. We will
keep you informed of the next School intake, and
also other activities and events that we conduct
from time to time.
Can I sign
up for particular modules that I'm keen in?
Sorry, the programme is offered as a whole.
Is NET
a charismatic group?
No, we are not. But many NET graduates are blessed
with charismatic gifts, and they may be members
of charismatic prayer groups.
NET recognises that the Holy Spirit is the power
behind an evangelistic ministry. So, as part of
our Evangelization module, we conduct an Evangelization
in the Spirit Seminar (EISS) to help participants
experience God's love in a tangible manner, and
to help release the charismatic gifts in them.
Is NET
a community?
We do get enquiries from Catholics who are "looking
for a community to belong to."
Arising from the shared experiences over the
18 months of formation, the NET graduate continues
to identify with NET and the School. When NET
graduates meet each other for the first time,
they often use the present tense (e. g. "I'm
from NET6") instead of the past tense ("
I was from NET6") to indicate which NET School
they are from. Some even drop the batch number,
e. g. "I'm from NET."
However, unless you are actively serving in the
School or one of the NET ministries / groups,
you will not meet other NETters as regularly as
a community should.
